Pad a Girl

In Kasese, a girl’s period can decide her future.

Right now, in villages tucked beneath the Rwenzori mountains, a girl misses school because she cannot afford a pad. She stays home, ashamed, week after week, until the gap between her and her classmates becomes too wide to close. Some never go back. Some, in the silence that period poverty and shame create, find themselves pregnant before they’ve finished growing up themselves, trading a classroom for a home she is not yet ready to run.

This is not a story about periods. It is a story about what happens when something as ordinary as menstruation is left unspoken, unsupported, and unaffordable. School dropout. Teenage motherhood. Cycles of poverty repeating themselves, girl after girl, because nobody stopped to ask what she needed to simply stay in school.

Pad a Girl exists to interrupt that story.

We show up in person, not just with pads, but with conversation. In our sessions, we sit with girls and talk plainly about their bodies, their choices, and their worth. We hand them a Period Diary, a small book where they track their cycles, write down how they’re feeling, note the questions they’re too shy to ask out loud. Over time, that diary becomes something more than a tracker rather it becomes a record of a girl learning to understand and trust herself. It becomes proof, page by page, that she is paying attention to her own life.

Knowledge shared this way stays. A girl who understands her body doesn’t have to fear it. A girl who has pads doesn’t have to choose between her dignity and her education. A girl who has been listened to is far less likely to go looking for love, attention, or safety in places that will cost her everything.

We have watched what happens when a girl is simply given what she needs to stay in school: she stays. She keeps her place in the classroom, her plans intact, her future still hers to write.
